DeAndre Hopkins’ mother says being resilient is the key to overcoming adversity

We all have our share of hard times, and that’s including NFL player DeAndre Hopkins and his mother. They’re revealing how they’ve risen up in the face of adversity.

MIAMI, Florida (FS) -- If there’s one thing we all share in this world, it’s that we all fall on hard times. That’s been true even for the Houston Texans’ DeAndre Hopkins, who’s had an undeniably stellar career in the NFL so far. But even he’s had to deal with his share of hardship that he’s learned to overcome. There may be no true key to happiness when it comes to facing adversity, but Hopkins and his mother shared with FanSided how they’ve leaned on his support network to overcome these things, and it’s a message that’s sure to inspire you to rise up, too.

The wide receiver opened up about his family life growing up: he lost his father before the age of 1, and his mother, Sabrina Greenlee, lost her sight. And now, the story of his upbringing will be made into a feature film called Sabrina — a dedication to his hardworking mother.

The message the two want to portray in their movie is a simple one: live life to the fullest, no matter what.

“Reality is live, hope, [have] courage. Be resilient,” Greenlee says. “All of those things, it took me a while to get there over the years. But just being encouraged, staying encouraged, it feels amazing to just live life. And so that’s the message that I want to portray. Just wake up every day and take life and live it. Smile. Be happy.”

Hopkins says he and his family have been hopeful and supportive of their mother, and Greenlee is showing no signs of slowing down. With the help of his brothers and sisters, the family learned to support one another during the hard times. And, if anything, Hopkins’ and Greenlee’s movie will help show others how it’s done.

“I want this movie to be able to motivate other people,” Hopkins says. “People get the message that it’s a movie of triumph, of overcoming things and helping other people overcome a lot of obstacles that they went through. And knowing that my family is like the average American family, but still, you have to smile through everything.”

Greenlee says the movie will begin production this year and is expected to come out early 2021.
